Notice
Beacon Meetup, Inc. (“Beacon,” “we,” “us”) offers a facial-matching feature that compares a live photo you take to the profile photo on your account. The purpose of this feature is anti-catfishing: to check that the person using the account matches the account’s profile photo. It is not identity verification, it is not a background check, and it does not confirm that any user is safe, trustworthy, or who they claim to be.
What we collect and how it is processed. To run this feature, you provide a live photo, which is compared to your profile photo. The comparison is performed in real time by our provider, Amazon Web Services (AWS), using Amazon Rekognition. We receive only a match result and a confidence score. We do not create or store a face template or other biometric identifier, and neither we nor our provider retains the live photo or the comparison for this feature after the match completes. To the extent this real-time comparison involves biometric data, we treat it accordingly and handle it as described here.
Purpose. We use the facial match only to check that the person using the account matches the account’s profile photo and to detect and prevent impersonation and fraud on the Services. We do not use it for any other purpose.
How long we keep it, and destruction
We do not retain biometric data after the facial match is completed. The match is performed in real time and returns only a result and a confidence score; no facial image or face template is stored by us or by our provider for this feature. We retain the match result and confidence score only as part of ordinary account and security records. We maintain and follow a written policy under which no biometric identifier or biometric information is retained beyond completion of the match, and in all events any biometric data would be permanently destroyed when the initial purpose has been satisfied, when you delete your account, or within three (3) years of your last interaction with us, whichever occurs first.
We do not sell or profit from your biometric data
We do not and will not sell, lease, trade, or otherwise profit from your biometric data.
We do not disclose it without your consent
We do not disclose, redisclose, or otherwise disseminate your biometric data unless: (1) you consent; (2) it is necessary to complete a transaction that you requested; (3) disclosure is required by state or federal law or municipal ordinance; or (4) disclosure is required by a valid warrant or subpoena issued by a court of competent jurisdiction.
Service providers. We use Amazon Web Services (AWS), through Amazon Rekognition, to perform the match. AWS processes the images transiently and only on our instructions to return the match result, and is contractually required to protect the data and not to retain, use, or disclose it for any other purpose.
How we protect it
We store and transmit biometric data using a reasonable standard of care and in a manner at least as protective as the way we store and transmit other sensitive information.
Your choice
The facial-matching feature is optional to the extent described in the app. If you do not wish to provide biometric data, do not complete the facial-match step; note that certain features may be unavailable to you as a result.
Consent
By tapping “I Agree” below, you acknowledge that you have read and understood this Biometric Data Notice and Consent, and you voluntarily provide your written consent and release for Beacon Meetup, Inc. and its service provider to collect, create, store, use, and destroy your biometric data as described above.
